“Effective Communication:  Asking what you want and getting what you ask
Darlene Geiger is the daughter of a master electrician and a licensed nurse. She earned a Masters of Communication in 2000 with human relationships as the cornerstone for research. She has taught various courses in interpersonal, group and conflict theory at Portland State University (2000-2012), earning three awards for teaching excellence, and currently serves as Associate Dean and Title II Director at Clackamas Community College.  Darlene believes there is simply one lesson that shines through time:
humans need other humans to become fully human.
Whether the context for communication includes employees, customers, colleagues or family, there is mutual reward in finding a human connection. The key to effective communication is experiencing that human connection. Through experiential learning and self-discovery exercises, you will learn how “Effective Communication:
Asking what you want and getting what you ask” applies to your experience both as a professional and as a human.

Outcomes include:

  • Identify purpose for interactions, whether to demonstrate, be informative, persuasive or entertaining…when colorful isn’t so attractive.
  • How to clarify needs and wants with better listening skills…shine in the moment.
  • Role adaptation:  Practice being the one who asks and the one who gets asked, for more effective communication in the workplace…how to talk seriously to the crew without coming off like an ass!
